Explore your learning and career goals

All students in Year 11 and 12 study for a Queensland Certificate of Education in order to either achieve university entrance or vocational education competencies. We recognise that every student is different and therefore offer a range of pathways to ensure career aspirations are achieved. Students are able to choose from three distinct pathways:

Students in Year 11 & 12 have access to a very generous range of Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) developed subjects across all key learning areas, including Music extension, which is offered at Year 12 level only. Year 11 and 12 students who excel in particular areas are invited to participate in the ‘BCC into Uni’ program, allowing students to commence a university degree whilst still at school. If a student is successful in completing the units of work provided and assessed by the University, they are automatically accepted into the course on completion of Year 12.

The Vocational Pathway is advocated for students who desire to enter the workforce or who wish to engage in further training immediately after completing their schooling. These students will choose fewer than six QCAA Authority Subjects and may engage with vocational education and training opportunities to supplement their selected subjects.

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a percentile ranking used by universities to select students for undergraduate courses. Ranging from 0.00 to 99.95, it reflects a student’s academic performance in comparison to other students. For example, an ATAR of 80.00 means the student performed better than 80% of their peers.

In Queensland, the ATAR is calculated using a student’s best five General subjects, or a combination of four General subjects plus one Applied subject or VET qualification (Certificate III or higher). Scaling is applied to ensure fairness across different subjects. Universities use the ATAR to determine course entry, with more competitive degrees requiring higher ATARs.
