Celebrating the legacy of Tom Stevens: A founding member of Bundaberg Christian College
BCC was sad to hear of the recent passing of Mr Tom Stevens. Tom was a founding BCC Board member who was integral to the establishment of the College and a champion of Christian education in the Bundaberg region.
Born on 22 September 1926, in Texas, Tom’s life was defined by his unwavering commitment to God, family, and service. He served in World War II and moved to Australia in July 1973 with his wife Janett, and children Brian and Martha. Tom and Janett’s eldest son Matt remained in South Dakota to complete his studies.
Looking for warmer weather to continue their cattle breeding, Tom and Janett bought a property in Glenco QLD, 35 miles northwest of Eidsvold. Tom became an Australian and US dual citizen in 1994 and considered it a privilege to be an Australian citizen.
Tom joined Gideons in 1982 and visited South America for a Bible Blitz. He joined the Bundaberg Gideons branch, and it was there that he met fellow BCC founding member Mal Formal. Mal mentioned to Tom his desire and attempt to start a Christian School in Bundaberg. Tom already had connections with Mr Brian Robertson (founding member) who was also looking to start a Christian school. Together, they formed the steering committee in 1994, which led to the establishment of Bundaberg Christian College in 1996.
Tom's list of the most important things that happened in his life include:
1. When I was ten years old and gave my heart to Jesus.
2. When I met my brown-eyed bride and we married.
3. When each of our children was born.
4. Being involved and active in churches in two different countries.
5. Being a Gideon.
A favourite quote of Tom’s was:
"When I say I am a Christian I’m not shouting, ‘I’m clean living. ’I’m whispering, ‘I was lost, Now I’m found and forgiven.’
When I say I am a Christian, I don’t speak of this with pride, I’m confessing that I stumble And need Christ to be my guide."

We honour the faithfulness and service of Tom and his wife Janett, who has also gone to be with the Lord. Their role in establishing BCC has left a lasting legacy and positive impact on thousands of BCC students and their families.
