Year 6 Christmas Market
By Mrs Debi Bosch, Year 6 Teacher
On Tuesday 21 November 48 very excited Year 6 students set up their market stalls for the “Creations for Compassion” Christmas market.
The market was the culmination of two terms of Project Based Learning, focusing on the topic that we are “Called to care for those in poverty around the world”.
Students were required to research a country that the charity Compassion Australia works in. They then set up a small business the sold products or provided a service to teachers and students in the BCC Junior School - with the aim of raising funds for Compassion and to help further their work in that country.
Students came up with many creative ideas including games, crocheted sunflowers, beaded bracelets and hand-made earrings. Students had to create a business name, logo and slogan as well as a cost and profit spreadsheet and advertisement for their business. Added to their stalls, were many beautiful products such as booklets, picture frames and cards which featured their own art; a visual representation of their prayer for their researched country.
We are very grateful for the wonderful support we had from the Junior School community, and in the end our Year 6 students were overwhelmed to discover they had raised more that $2000 for Compassion! They were all very happy to think that their hard work had paid off and they will be helping many impoverished children around the globe, all because they answered the “Call to Care”!
