← Tournament Loss Inspires Netballers To Work Harder

On May 25th, Bundaberg Christian College's Netballers participated in a Queensland Wide Secondary School Netball tournament – the Vicki Wilson cup.

Named after former Diamonds and Firebirds coach Vicki Wilson OAM, schools play off against other schools in their school sport region in the preliminary rounds. The top 20 schools in Vicki Wilson Cup and Vicki Wilson Shield from across the state then enter the Vicki Wilson Cup finals series for the chance to be crowned state champion.

This was the first time BCC has entered the competition and despite significant efforts by both Middle School and Senior School teams, the girls struggled against far more experienced players from across the Northern Cluster of the Wide Bay Region.

The senior girls won their first game 11-7 eventually finishing 6th out of 8 teams. The Middle School girls finished 7th out of 8.

Middle School Coach Jackson Rigby was impressed with the tenacity of the players. “Both the senior and middle years teams never gave up and showed improvement throughout the day” he said. “This tournament was definitely a stepping stone towards BCC's netball development and there was much upside despite the results. We will learn from the experience and are now raring to go for the inter-school netball competition in term 3.”

Senior School Coach Karin Vorster was also impressed that despite facing far more experienced players, the White and Blue made sure they gave it their all.

“They played with determination, good spirit and had a lovely time being a team. We have seen which skills we need to work on and everyone is really encouraged by the day’s games.”

Ms Vorster also pointed out that by participating against chools with more experienced players, the girls themselves were wanting to improve their abilities. “They all want to continue with our Thursday training sessions so we can concentrate on building the skills we need to improve our overall game.”

The Bundaberg District Secondary School Sport Winter Season commences on August 4th with Netball being played alongside Football (Soccer), Basketball and Table Tennis.
