Secondary Welcome to the High School at BCC. These are vital formative years for our teenage students and our goal is to see them grow into Christ-focused young men and women who make a positive difference in their families, community and future careers. To this end, we have high expectations and a very robust behaviour management system - with an emphasis on building Christian character around our RISE values of Respect, Integrity, Servanthood and Excellence. Our secondary staff are a wonderful, dedicated team of professional teachers who provide student-focused learning from a Christ-centred worldview. This is the basis for both our classroom and extra-curricular activities. Christian Living classes, Chapel and Bible-based devotions are integral for both staff and students. We offer strong academic and VET opportunities across a wide selection of subjects, including studies in agriculture, hospitality, business and marine. Over the last year we have grown rapidly to a high school campus of over 300 students. This is made up of treble-streamed classes in Years 8, 9, 10, and 11, with double-streaming in Year 12. Our College is unique in that it is supported by some 18 Churches in the Bundaberg Community. I don’t know of any other school in the world that has this very special level of support. I have taught in three different countries and can confidently say that our high school students are among the finest anywhere. I would welcome the opportunity to introduce you to them and to our Secondary program. The objectives of the Secondary School curriculum are: * To provide an educationally sound core of subjects for every student, ensuring skills development in literacy, numeracy and general knowledge that will complement their future career paths. * To provide some choice within the curriculum to meet the personal needs and interests of individual students. * To provide a curriculum that caters for students’ varying competencies so that highly capable students can progress at a rapid rate and less capable students can progress according to their own rate of learning. * To provide, in junior secondary schooling, skills that are prerequisites for certain senior subjects, e.g. Graphics, Home Economics, Health & PE * To provide, in senior secondary schooling, skills that are prerequisites for certain tertiary courses and vocational opportunities. * To provide relevant experiences which may prepare the student for the workforce and foster interest in career opportunities.
The high school is working in conjunction with the primary school to develop a P-10 curriculum following the national common curriculum and Key Learning Areas (KLAs). This is an exciting project for staff and students. The fact that our college is P-12 gives us a unique opportunity to offer a seamless curriculum that bridges the gap that often exists between Years 7 and 8. A key phrase in our mission statement is that we provide a ‘caring environment’ for students to learn and grow in. There are a number of support networks in place within our school community including a Chaplain, Counsellor, Year Level Coordinators, Subject Coordinators and Learning Support Unit. Please see our First Points of Contact sheet to know who to contact.
